Show Biography

TERROIR was formed in 1998 and simultaneously opened two offices - in Sydney and in Hobart. The practice emerged from a series of conversations in regard to the potential for architecture to open up question of cultural consequence in relation to our contemporary condition. Since then, from offices in Hobart and Sydney, numerous awards, professorships, lectures and completed projects have validated this vision.

Gerard Reinmuth and Scott Balmforth are partners in-charge of the Sydney and Hobart offices respectively while Richard Blythe combines his role as Head of the School of Design and Architecture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) with strategic project by project involvement across both offices. Structurally the practice operates as a single entity with the workload managed freely between the two offices according to the availability and special skills of the staff. The output of the practice is focused by the adherence to a collective "ideology" that ensures a consistency and approach across all projects.

The practice explores how architecture mediates what were traditional cultural relationships between people and between people and their world in a globalised condition where the very idea of cultural boundaries has been fundamentally questioned because of the interactivity of society and capital at a global level.

Richard Blythe has recently completed a PHD at RMIT whilst Gerard Reinmuth and Scott Balmforth have recently completed their invited Master of Architecture by project at RMIT. Gerard Reinmuth holds a position as Adjunct Professor at University of Technology Sydney. Scott Balmforth holds a position as Adjunct Professor at University of Tasmania.
