A project of renovating a 35-year-old private house in the forest of Karuizawa into a hotel. The focus of our design was on windows and how they connected with the outside environment, to enjoy the beauty of the four seasons throughout the year. The placement and shape of the openings were manipulated to create a series of views that would appear as if the building were surrounded by trees. A white-painted room makes you envision the scenery behind the wall. This continued cutout landscape allowed for a larger expanse than the actual space, as well as various connections to the outside. The experience of being able to feel the natural environment indoors is something we look forward to.
