Urban Renewal of Informal Settlements - Documenting & Reimagining Informalities

This work aims to interpret and analyze an extended space in the form of a Detailed Plan of the Marconi Neighborhood, creating Urban Acupunctures allowing its accessibility, regeneration and basic habitability, intervening in backyards, pockets or squares, streets and blocks, in both Macro and Micro levels.

The informal settlements of Luanda, caused by the rural exodus, in a country with war consequences. With that, a direct reaction of this growth is the underburden of urban infrastructures and the peripheral areas, are the most affected by this, which are characterized by the lack of basic sanitation, irregular and disorderly meshes, which also make it difficult to implement the necessary infrastructures, etc. These zones are also called “Musseques” which means “red land” in Kimbundo, they have almost always been seen as spaces of social exclusion and poverty.

It is difficult to say exactly what would be the best way to intervene in Musseques, because of the impact of the financial crisis in Angola, it will not be possible to use the techniques of Tábula raza, demolish and rebuild, which has been commonly used, this time it will have to be by Creating Urban Acupunctures in the Informal Neighborhood of Marconi and Developing Basic Habitability . In addition, the neighborhood is rich in culture and authenticity, which will support the development of the project.
